2025The ASCENT wordmark is the first part of a semester-long publication design project focused on the economics and funding of space technology. After developing the magazine concept and name, I chose Pirulen, a futuristic display typeface with geometric forms and open apertures. Its letterforms give the title a visual connection to space technology while establishing a distinct identity for the magazine. The wordmark sets the foundation for the editorial spreads developed in the second part of the project.
PART 2: MAGAZINE SPREADSASCENT is a publication about the economics of space: who funds exploration and technology, which companies and countries profit, and who gets left out. Its stories examine how investment shapes technological advancement, global influence, and military power. For this second part of the project, I developed a visual identity for the magazine and designed a series of editorial spreads to bring its subject matter to life.
The visual language draws from scrapbook layouts and cut-and-paste imagery. Each spread breaks the grid while still using it as a foundation, balancing unexpected compositions with a consistent structure. This approach gives the magazine room to explore the scale and complexity of the space industry while keeping its pages connected through a cohesive visual identity.
